Absinthe gets its name from the key botanical in its distillation: Artemisia Absinthium, known in english as Grand Wormwood.

Absinthe was banned for nearly a century in many countries around the world for its inclusion of Grand Wormwood. It is the only spirit ever singled out in a prohibition of this kind. It was never made illegal in the UK, which meant that many of the great classic cocktails to come from Britain during the 1920s and 30s called for absinthe in their recipes. Modern science finally caught up and disproved the 19th century theories that originally had it banned and regulations were changed around the world to finally make absinthe legal again.
